2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Spindle Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Spindle on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: To handle spindle work, you should begin by raising the car and removing the back tire and wheel from it. For those with rear drum brakes, loosen the bolts of the drum brake flex hose at the axle trailing arm, detach the clips and pull off the drum brake. If you have rear disc brakes, take out the flex hose bolt, then detach the caliper by removing the bolts that hold the guide pin and hold it up with a bungee or wire hanger. Following this, separate the brake rotor and bearing from the rear hub. Open the dust cap located in the rear and take off the hub and bearing and bearing retaining nut from the front spindle. Wiggle the bracket grip on the cable and undo the two bolts that attach these to the axle trailing arms. If your vehicle uses antilock brakes, take the bolt out of the wheel speed sensor on top of the disc brake adapter and remove the sensor from the car. Get rid of the bolts keeping the support plate or disc brake adapter and spindle to the axle, then pull the support plate or disc brake adapter backward as you unbolt the spindle. To set up the new seal, slid it onto the spindle and install the spindle into the rear of the support plate or brake disc adapter. Put new mounting bolts on the studs or carefully clean and attach the original mounting bolts with Mopar(R) Stud & Bearing Mount Adhesive, then put the support plate or disc brake adapter against the spindle and secure the parts with four tightened bolts (at a torque of 95 Nm or 70 ft. lbs.). On vehicles that have antilock brakes, fit the wheel speed sensor inside the disc brake adapter and tighten it with a bolt turned to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.). Line up the parking brake cable brackets with their locations on the trailing arm and put in the two bolts, tightening them to 11 Nm (100 inch lbs.). Put the hub and bearing on the spindle with a new hub and bearing retaining nut and tighten everything to 217 Nm (160 ft. lbs.). When using rear drum brakes, make sure to adjust them first, before fitting the brake drums. For vehicles with a rear disc brake system, place the brake rotor on, then snap in the disc brake caliper by threading the caliper guide pin bolts and tightening them to 22 Nm (192 inch lbs.). Lastly, get the bolts that secure the disc brake or drum brake flex hose onto the axle trailing arm, connect the rear wheel and tire and set all the wheel nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) before the vehicle is lowered.
