2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Parking Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Parking Brake Shoes on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before servicing or repairing the parking brake shoes, first raise and secure the vehicle. If you're inspecting and servicing both sides, repeat the procedure on the other side as well. Take off the nuts on the wheel and pull the tire and wheel from the lug bolts. When required, withdraw the caliper piston slightly to give access to take out the caliper by pulling on its inboard side. With the two caliper guide pin bolts removed, rotate the caliper away from the rotor and upwards to separate it from the lower machined part. Use brake suspension cords or rope to suspend the brake caliper from the rear strut so you don't damage the brake line. Get rid of the clips that hold the rotor to the studs, then take the rotor off the hub and bearing. Slide out the dust cap from the rear hub and bearing, remove the retaining nut and after that, take off both the rear hub assembly and the bearing from the rear spindle. Pull the clip from the rear brake shoe hold-down pin, shorten the adjuster wheel and take out the adjuster from the parking brake shoes. To get rid of the shoes, first, get the lower return spring away, then pull the rear shoe back from what attaches it and undo the upper return spring. Then, remove the clip at the front brake hold-down and remove the front brake shoe. When installing, put the front brake shoe over the adapter, insert and secure the hold-down pin through the shoe and add the hold-down clip. Connect the upper shoe return spring to the end of each shoe, place the rear brake shoe over the anchor block, adjust the parking brake actuator lever in between the shoes and finally add the lower return spring. Position the brake shoe adjuster over the front and rear shoes with the star wheel against the back of the car, run the hold-down pin through the rear shoe and attach it with the hold-down clip. Set the parking brake shoes to a 171 mm diameter using a brake shoe guage. Mount the hub and bearing and afterward fasten the retaining nut to 217 Nm. Bolts at the end of the hub should be used to attach the hub, bearing dust cap and brake rotor. Lay the disc brake caliper on top of the rotor and onto the brake adapter and fasten it in place with the two caliper guide pin bolts, tightening each to 22 Nm. Mount the tire and wheel again and tighten each wheel nut to a torque of 135 Nm. When the car is parked and the brakes are checked, lower the entire vehicle and check the parking brake shoes.
