2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Spindle Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Repair a Spindle on Rear Drum Brakes on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: To begin servicing of the spindle on a rear drum brake model, lift the vehicle, secure it, take off the nuts holding the wheel and remove the rear tire and wheel from the vehicle. After that, remove the clips holding the brake drum in place and lift out the brake drum, then remove the dust cap from the places in the hub and the bearing. After finishing those steps, remove the hub nut and take the hub and bearing off the spindle. Release the screws clamping the rear brake hose to the axle trailing arm and then come off the two bolts on that arm that hold the parking brake cable and brackets. With antilock brakes, take out the screw holding the antilock brake wheel speed sensor onto the brake support plate, then take off the sensor head. With the brake support plate removed, slide the spindle straight off the axle. Take a new spindle seal, insert it onto the spindle, put the spindle into the brake support plate and set it on the end of the axle. Wash the mounting bolts and use Mopar(R) Stud & Bearing Mount Adhesive or replace the bolts entirely. Screw the four bolts in and tighten them to 95 Nm. Connect the brake hose routing bracket and clamp, fit the two mounting screws and tighten them to 11 Nm. When antilock brakes are used, place the wheel speed sensor head on top and tighten the screw to 12 Nm. Position the cable routing brackets on the trailing arm's mounts, put in the two bolts and tighten to 11 Nm. Install the hub and bearing on the spindle, screw in a new hub nut and tighten to 217 Nm. Installing the hub and bearing dust cap should follow the adjustment of the rear brakes and then placing the brake drum. Install the tire and wheel in place, fasten the mounting nuts until they reach 135 Nm, lower the car and press the brake pedal several times to make sure it doesn't sag.
