2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install and Remove an Ignition Coil on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: A single spark plug gets its ignition from a coil that goes into a precisely drilled hole in the engine head and is held in place by a mounting stud/nut on the manifold. Underneath the coil, you'll find a rubber boot that seals the spark plug; the spring for mechanical contact is attached and cannot be serviced separately. The O-ring is added to the design at the part where the coil attaches to the cylinder head. The coil may need to be reached by taking off the throttle body air intake tube or box. Press down on the release lock and pull away from the electical connector attached to the coil. Gently spray at the base of the coil with compressed air, then remove the coil's nut on the mounting stud. Gently move the coil from the opening in the head with a little twist and take it out of the vehicle. Before you install, use compressed air to clean up the area around the spark plug and examine the coil O-ring; put in a fresh O-ring and apply silicone to make installation easier. Guide the ignition coil into its place in the cylinder head and put the coil onto the spark plug as you push the base part of the coil onto the stud. Afterward, install the nut on top of the stud. Align and press on the electric connector to the coil and, if required, reattach the throttle by pushing the air tube steadily into place.
