2005 Jeep Liberty Rod Bearing Parts and Q&A
Q: How to measure Rod Bearing Clearance with Plastigage on 2005 Jeep Liberty?
A: Before measuring the bearing clearance, be sure to remove any oil from the surface, so that Plastigage does not dissolve. Then, add a piece of Plastigage to the inside wall of the bearing shell in the cap, approximately 6.35 mm (1/4 inch) off center from the oil holes and over any other suspected spots. Screw in the bearing cap bolts properly, then unscrew them and measure the width of the flattened Plastigage on the provided metric scale. A band on the scale that has the same width represents how much clearance there is, shown in thousandths of a millimeter. Record the difference in readings between the top and bottom of the tool, as it demonstrates how much taper there is and also note down all the readings you take. Make sure the clearance indicating in Plastigage matches the spec in the engine specs for that type of gauge. In the end, install the right crankshaft bearings so that you meet the required bearing clearances.
