2005 Jeep Liberty Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Timing Cover on 2005 Jeep Liberty?
A: The first step to taking off the timing belt cover is to remove the crankshaft vibration damper and the generator drive belt tensioner assembly. After that, remove the bolts holding the timing belt front cover and pull off the covers. Start by taking off the front covers and then removing the timing belt for the rear panel. Hold the camshaft sprocket in place with Special Tool 6847, then take out the center bolt and afterward remove the timing belt idler pulley. Also, undo the rear cover fasteners and take off the cover from the engine. When installing, start with the timing belt rear cover and its bolts; skip using an impact wrench on the camshaft sprocket bolt to avoid destroying the locating pin, so hand tighten it instead. Put the camshaft sprockets in place, holding them in special position using Special Tool 6848 and tighten the center bolt until it achieves a torque of 101 Nm (75 ft. lbs.). You should see a timing belt idler pulley on your vehicle; install this and also tighten its mounting bolt to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). After that, install the timing belt front covers and make sure to tighten the fasteners to 7 Nm (60 inch lbs.), then put back the generator drive belt tensioner and crankshaft vibration damper.
