2005 Jeep Liberty Parking Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Parking Brake Shoes on 2005 Jeep Liberty?
A: You need to elevate the vehicle, take out the tire and wheel and then unscrew the brake caliper and the rotor. Take the rear park brake shoes apart. Wipe the brake support plate as well as other brake hardware with a cloth dampened with water or brake cleaner, but do not use any other kind of cleaner. Brake shoe contact pads showing light rust and scale should be cleaned with fine sandpaper. If the riveted brake shoes are worn 0.78 mm (1/32 inch) past the end of the rivets or if bonded lining wears to 1.6 mm (1/16 inch), they must be replaced. See if the lining contact fits both sides of the pattern evenly or if it leans in only one direction; if it's not even, swap the shoes and check the drum for any signs of runout or taper. If the star wheel, threads or components in the adjuster screw assembly are badly damaged or severely rusted, replace it. If you know that your brakes drag, get rid of any brake springs or retainer that is worn, bent or collapsed, as the heat from the drag could weaken them. Test the brake shoe contact pads on the support plate and swap it out if any of them are missing, worn, unusable or damaged. Once servicing is completed, reassemble the park brake shoes in the rear, readjust the rear brake shoes, put in the disc brake rotor and caliper and then fit the tire and wheel assembly. It is advised to condition a new parking brake system or after changing linings, by coming to a stop from a speed of 25 miles per hour on dry concrete or pavement with light to moderate pressure on the parking brake lever.
