2005 Jeep Liberty Steering Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Steering Shaft on 2005 Jeep Liberty?
A: The first step is to take away the battery negative cable and remove both the knee blocker cover and knee blocker to work on the intermediate steering shaft. Turn the steering wheel, lock the tires straight ahead and then pull out the lower column bolt (4), lowering the steering coupler (3) shaft from the column. Pull the intermediate shaft seal out by pulling (1) on the four tangs that hold it to the panel and then release the center support bearing bracket from the shock tower mount. Remove the bolt (4) connecting the pinch coupler to the steering gear, then the coupler (3) at the steering gear and release the intermediate shaft (2). Once removing the intermediate shaft, take out the center support bracket from the steering shaft too. First, set the center support bearing bracket onto the steering shaft if it was removed and tighten it to 14 Nm (125 inch lbs.). After that, fit the intermediate shaft (2) into the vehicle and connect the coupler (3) to the steering gear, followed by the lower coupler pinch bolt (4) at the steering gear, tightened to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Set the center support bearing bracket onto the shock tower holes, then place the intermediate shaft seal inside so the four tangs (1) connect to the panel. Next, put the steering coupler shaft on the column and tighten the upper pinch bolt (1) to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Turn the steering wheel, put back the knee blocker cover and knee blocker and then plug in the negative battery connection again.
