2006 Jeep Liberty Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service the Timing Cover and Chain on 2006 Jeep Liberty?
A: For timing chain service, start by freeing the negative cable of the battery and emptying the cooling system. Get rid of the electric cooling fan and fan shroud assembly first and take out the fan and the fan drive assembly as well. Individually remove the small hose from the timing cover and also loosen the lower radiator hose attached to the engine. After that, unbolt the accessory drive belt tensioner assembly (1), crankshaft damper, generator and A/C compressor. Always use Mopar Grey Engine RTV sealant since the 3.7L engine's front cover is sealed with an anaerobic sealer instead of a standard gasket. No need to take out the water pump when removing the timing cover. With the bolts loosened, take off the timing cover. Ensure you clean the cover and block surface with rubbing alcohol, not oil and no abrasive tools so you don't damage them. Check each of the o-rings in the water passage to see if they are damaged and if so, replace them. Scoop out Mopar Grey Engine RTV sealer (3) and use it to make a 3 to 4 mm bead around the front cover, followed by installing the cover and tightening the flange head fasteners to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.). Put back the crankshaft damper, A/C compressor, generator and accessory drive belt tensioner assembly. Link up the upper and lower radiator hoses, both heater hoses and the electric fan shroud with the viscous fan drive assembly. After that, fill the cooling system and reconnect the battery's negative cable.
