  • Q: What Are the Key Installation Steps and Precautions for a Piston Ring Set on 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
    A: Always measure the piston ring end gap with a feeler gauge after you take the piston rings off but before installation on the piston. When you look at the piston, the identification mark on the upper and intermediate rings should be positioned toward the top, so put the rings facing up. The order for the piston rings is oil expander ring, the top oil ring rail, the lower oil ring rail, No. 2 intermediate ring and the upper piston ring No. 1. First, put in the oil ring expander, then replace the upper side rail and lastly the lower side rail. For the side rail installation, set one end between the piston ring groove and the oil ring expander, keep it pressed and push it into position, not using the piston ring expander. Now, insert No. 2 piston ring, then place the No. 1 piston ring. Be sure to space the piston ring openings so the oil ring expander gap is at least 45° wider than the side rail gaps, while keeping them away from the piston pin and the thrust line.
