Q: How to Service and Repair a Parking Brake Cable for Front on 2006 Dodge Caravan?
A: Before servicing or repairing the front parking brake cable, raise and secure the vehicle and pull up on the automatic self-adjusting mechanism in the parking brake lever assembly. Begin with removing the left rear and intermediate park brake cables from the equalizer and next, take off the front park cable nylon retainer by accessing it on the outrigger bracket with a 14 mm box wrench or an aircraft type hose clamp and screwdriver. Lift up the vehicle, remove the left front door sill molding and kick panel to reach the park brake cable and assembly. Open the floor mat and grab the park brake cable to remove it, along with the seal, from the floor pan. Take the button off the clevis, pop out the back of the cable from the pedal assembly bracket, remove the retainer on the parking brake lever assembly bracket and pull the front parking brake cable through the floor pan. With fold-in-floor seating, free the parking brake, lift the vehicle, prop it up and let go of the automatic self-adjusting mechanism manually. Take out the front cable from the equalizer and the locking pliers you set up before. Take out the top cable from the clip located on the leads toward the front; then, collapse the retainer fingers with a 13 mm 12-point box wrench and take the cable out. Drop the car, remove the left front door sill molding and kick panel, unclip the end button from the lever assembly mechanism reel, draw the cable out of the bracket and away from the lever, lift the carpeting and break the seal before pulling out the front parking brake cable at the footwell opening. Pass the cable assembly forward through the hole in the floor, bring the cable strand button insert through the lever bracket, fit the cable retainer onto the park brake cable and into the pedal assembly and join the cable strand button with the clevis on the park brake pedal. Place the floor pan seal where the flange meets the floor pan, align the carpet again, raise the vehicle and slot the brake cable and housing inside the body outrigger bracket so the retainers snap it safely. Set the automatic self-adjusting mechanism tension by hand, join the park brake cables to the park brake cable equalizer, remove support for the vehicle and press the park brake pedal just once to secure the cables. To install fold-in-floor seating, go through the hole in the floor pan with all but the lever-end cable button, connect the button through the bracket on the lever assembly and hook the cable housing into the retainer for the park brake pedal. After installing the cable strand button into the reel on the parking brake lever, make sure the floor pan seal is level with the floor pan, put the carpeting back into position, install the left front kick panel and door sill molding, raise the vehicle to support it, run the cable by way of the intermediate bracket, press down on the cable housing retainer until it snaps in place, attach the front cable to its clips, grip the cable tightly with the locking pliers, pull back on the button to join the equalizer to all three parking brake cables, remove the locking pliers, allow the automatic self-adjusting mechanism to take up slack, lower the vehicle, and apply and release the park brake pedal once to seat the cables.
