2006 Dodge Durango Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle on 2006 Dodge Durango?
A: To work on the steering knuckle, first lift and support your vehicle, then take off the wheel and tire. After that, get rid of the brake caliper, rotor, shield and the ABS wheel speed sensor, if available. When working on a 4X4 model, take out the front half shaft nut. Unscrew the nut from the tie rod end and then use puller 8677 to separate the tie rod from the knuckle, so that the ball joint seal is not harmed. Take off the upper ball joint nut and use Remover 8677 to pry the ball joint free from the knuckle. Slide a hydraulic jack underneath the lower control arm, take out the nut from the lower ball joint using Remover 8677 and then separate the ball joint from the knuckle so you can remove the knuckle. After that, take out the bolts holding the hub/bearing in place on the steering knuckle. It is important to ensure the surface of the ball joint stud is free from grease and water, so you might use mineral spirits to do it. Put the bearing onto the steering knuckle and tighten the bolts to a torque of 163 Nm (120 ft. lbs.). Put the knuckle over the upper and lower ball joints, install the upper nut to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.) and tighten the lower nut to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.). Once the jack is out of the lower suspension arm, place the tie rod end and tighten the nut to 75 NM or 55 ft. lbs. Drop in the halfshaft to the hub/bearing on the front end of your 4x4, then attach the halfshaft nut and tighten it to 185 ft. lbs (251 Nm). If your vehicle has them, install the ABS wheel speed sensor and the brake shield, rotor and caliper. After that, put on the wheel and tire combination, get rid of the support, slowly lower the car and align the wheels.
