2006 Jeep Commander Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace a Faulty or Damaged Air Bag on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: The first step to replacing a damaged passenger air bag is to disconnect the negative cable from the battery, let it sit for two minutes to allow the system capacitor to discharge. Take the instrument panel from the front seats and place it on a clean work surface, mantaining on the top upside down if need be. Slide the lock to the side of the connector and pull the air bag wire from the connector on the instrument panel. Unscrew the two screws from the air bag mounting bracket to the instrument panel and then continue by taking the top pad off. Pull the air bag holder down while pushing the side of the air bag housing up to remove the air bag hooks from the air bag retainer. Take the housing, inflator and cushion together out of the retainer receptacle. For installation, first lay the top pad with the air bag receptacle facing upward, put the passenger air bag housing into the receptacle and make sure all the hooks connect with their matching points. Put the top pad back on the instrument panel and then join and secure the air bag mounting bracket to the instrument panel structure by tightening its two screws to 12 N.m (105 in. lbs.). Join the air bag pigtail wire connector back to the passenger air bag, see that the latch and red lock are securely attached and fit the instrument panel into the passenger area. It is important not to reconnect the negative battery cable until the verification test for the supplemental restraint system has been carried out after service to any of its components.
