2006 Jeep Commander Brake Light Switch Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service the Brake Light Switch on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: Servicing a brake lamp switch on an air bag-equipped vehicle requires first disabling the supplemental restraint system by removing the car's negative battery cable and waiting two minutes. First, take out the cover from the opening in the instrument panel for the steering column. Push and keep the brake pedal down, then turn the brake lamp switch housing counterclockwise about 30 degrees to make the keyed hole in the mounting bracket line up with the tabs on the switch locking collar. Bend the switch back up into the keyed hole and it will pop out; then remove the brake pedal and unplug the wire harness connector from the brake lamp switch. When installing, check that the black plunger inside the brake lamp switch is all the way out, connect the switch's wire harness plug and press and hold the brake pedal again. Plug the tabs of the collar into the keyed hole on the brake pedal bracket, put the housing in place and rotate it 30 degrees clockwise to secure the tabs. Keep the pressure on the brake pedal below 20 pounds to not harm the brake booster. Take your foot off the brake pedal so the brake line reverts to its normal position while the plunger self-adjusts with a light quick sound. In the end, put back the steering column cover and hook up the negative battery cable.
