2006 Jeep Commander Brake Line Parts and Q&A
Q: How Should You Approach Brake Line Service and Repair on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: It is suggested that a preformed metal brake tube be used for brake hose and line work, but double-wall steel tube may be an acceptable alternative in emergencies when no factory replacement is found. There are special tools used to bend the pipes properly so they don't kink and particular tools are needed to form double inverted flares or ISO flares. Lop off the damaged section with a Tubing Cutter and ream both the cut ends so they fit properly when creating the double inverted flare. Attach a replacement tube nut to the tube, slip the tube into the flaring tool and set the gauge form over where the tube meets the tool. Move the tubing through the jaws of the flaring tool, so it lines up with the recessed notch for your tube diameter and then tighten the tool's bar. Fit the plug from the gauge over the tube, move the compression disc up against the gauge, then center the tapered flaring screw inside the compression disc's recess. Press the handle on the tool until the plug gauge snugs up in the jaws of the flaring tool, then take away the plug gauge and complete the inverted flare. Using the Tubing Cutter, cut off the tube where it's damaged and then clean up any burrs inside with the Pipe Cleaner Tool. Place the tube nut over the tube, slide the tube into the flaring tool with its top against the tool bar and tighten the bar. Choose the right size yoke screw adaptor, put lubricant on it, place it over the tube and turn in until the adaptor is set on the tool bar. Work with the Snap-On Flaring Tool TFM428 or an equivalent, when flaring to ISO standards.
