2006 Jeep Commander Parking Assist Distance Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain the Rear Parking Assist Distance Sensor on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: The first step to service the rear Parking Assist Distance Sensor is to disconnect and isolate the battery's negative cable. Access to the two rear outboard sensors is simple with the rear bumper fascia installed; the two inboard sensors need the bumper fascia to be removed. Once the fascia has been taken off, remove the wire harness connector from the park assist sensor connector receptacle. Pry the magnetic sensor bracket mechanisms from the sensor tabs to release the sensor and pull out the O-ring spacer from on top of the sensor protrusion. When you are installing the sensor, slide the O-ring spacer on the sensor membrane protrusion, so the spacer's wide surface meets the sensor housing. Place the sensor into the sensor bracket at the back of the rear bumper fascia until the bracket tabs grip the sides of the sensor, making the sensor membrane lie flat on the outer plastic surface. Check that the O-ring spacers aren't squeezed against the sensor membrane and that each membrane is in the middle of its fascia opening, since these things can disrupt sensor performance. After that, link the wire harness connector with the sensor, drop the bumper fascia for the inboard sensors and plug the battery negative cable back in.
