2006 Jeep Commander Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: The power steering pump should be serviced and repaired when the engine is turned off, to keep you safe from contact with moving parts when checking the fluid. Let the power steering fluid be of MS-10838 (DaimlerChrysler) quality or exactly the same quality, as establishing difference between them may hurt the steering pump and its system. Make sure to wipe the filler cap, then check that the fluid level displays FULL when it is at a usual room temperature. Top off the pump's fluid container and let it sit undisturbed for at least two minutes. Start the engine briefly, then turn it off so the oil has a chance to circulate. Should the fluid drop while running, refill and run the engine again until the fluid no longer changes after the engine stops. Raise the front of the car and spin the wheel from side to side, touching the wheel stops at least 20 times as you go. Look at the fluid level once more and add fluid if it is low. Set the car low to the ground, start it and gently move the steering wheel back and forth until it reaches its lock positions. When you check the break-in oil, make sure to turn off the engine. Should the oil be really foamy or milky, have the vehicle stand for a few minutes and try the procedure again. Do not operate the vehicle for an extended time if you see foamy fluid, as it could break the pump.
