2007 Jeep Commander Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Remove and Replace a Power Steering Pump for 3.7L and 4.7L Engines on 2007 Jeep Commander?
A: Never reinstall the older power steering pump pulley for your 3.7L or 4.7L engine, as it isn't designed to be used again; only use a brand new pulley if you remove it. Replace the pulley if it's bent, cracked or has become loose. Attach the new pulley to the pump with the OTC(R) 7771 power steering pulley tool or another equivalent and make sure it's flush with the pump shaft end, with both the tool and pulley being aligned as the shaft is inserted. Following assembly of the power steering pump, turn the engine on and run it for about 5 minutes to listen for any belts chirping. Should there be a chirp, move the pulley out 0.5 mm (0.020 in.) and if the noise increases, push it another 1.0 mm (0.040 in.) but be sure it does not touch the mounting bolts.
