2006 Jeep Commander Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: Before removing the rack and pinion, straighten the front wheels and center and lock the steering wheel. Drain the power steering system and afterward, take out the bolt holding the column coupler shaft and free the shaft from the rack and pinion. Release the drip tray, then continue with the pressure line and the return line at the rack and pinion. While it is raised and off the ground, take out the front tires. Come loose the tie rod end jam nuts, take out the outer tie rod end nut and use special tool #8677 to remove the tie rod from the knuckle. Then, take out the splash shield in front and, if you have a 4X4, take out the front axle as well. The two bolts holding the rack and pinion can be removed once it's rotated all the way right which will provide more space for the control arm. Once it's pushed down and turned all the way left, the rack and pinion can be pulled out of the vehicle. Should it be required, remove the outer tie rod ends from your steering system.
