2006 Jeep Liberty Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Axle Shaft on 2006 Jeep Liberty?
A: To service or repair the axle shaft, put the vehicle on a hoist with it in neutral before working on it. I removed the rear brake system, the wheel speed sensor and the differential housing cover to empty the lubricant. Don't forget to rotate the differential case so that the pinion mate shaft lock screw is visible. Once it's accessible, remove the screw and the pinion mate shaft from the differential case. Squeeze the axle shaft toward the center to remove its C-lock and remove the shaft from the side gear and axle tube. Before installation, rub the seal lip and bearing bore with gear lubricant, then insert the axle shaft through both, making sure it fits into the side gear splines. Put the C-lock on the axle shaft end and push outward on the axle shaft to seat it in the side gear. Slide the pinion mate shaft through the thrust washers and differential pinions into the differential case and make sure the hole in the shaft is lined up with the hole in the case. Tighten the lock screw with Loctite onto the threads to 11 Nm. After that, reinstall the differential cover, wheel speed sensor and the components for the rear brakes.
