2006 Jeep Liberty Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Brake Caliper on 2006 Jeep Liberty?
A: Brake caliper service should start by propping the brake pedal with a rod to hold pressure on the system and then lift and support the vehicle. Carefully remove both the wheel and its tire and if replacing the caliper, also remove the brake hose banjo bolt. After that, extract the caliper slide pin bolts and move the caliper off the car. Open the caliper by taking out the brake shoes and emptying the brake fluid. Fill one-inch thick shop towels inside a piece of wood for the cushion, then use gentle bursts of low pressured compressed air to slowly move the piston out of the bore. Pull off the caliper piston dust cap and seal it with the proper gear, next take out the bolts and their dust boots. Clean every piece of the system using clean brake fluid or brake cleaner, but not gasoline or any similar solvents. Search the piston for any damage; if there's any, get a new one that matches what the original was made of, because wood and metal pistons cannot replace each other. Brush the bore out with a brake hone if there are signs of corrosion, but if it's very bad or polishing makes it larger than 0.025 mm, get a replacement caliper. While mounting, check that the surround is clean and dry, rub the caliper piston bore, the new seal and the piston with clean brake fluid and apply silicone grease to the bushings and boots. Put the bushing boots in place, secure your bushings and position the new piston seal in its groove. The caliper piston goes into the bore and the dust boot is then seated into place with the Installer Tool C-4842 and Tool Handle C-4171. When the bleed screw is missing, put in a new one. When you install the caliper braking system, mount the brake pads, coat the anti-rattle clips with lubricant and attach the caliper to the caliper adapter. Put silicone grease on both mounting slide pin bolts, fasten them in place and tighten them to 15 Nm. After making sure the brake hose is straight and not twisted, put the banjo bolt back on and tighten it to 31 Nm using new seal washers. After you've taken out the prop rod, bled the base brake system, put the wheels and tires back, lower the car and check that the pedal feels sturdy.
