2006 Jeep Liberty Shift Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Shift Cable on 2006 Jeep Liberty?
A: Before repairing or fixing the gearshift cable, move the transmission to PARK and raise the vehicle. Take out the shift cable attachment from the transmission lever and move the cable off its rack. Take off the vehicle to access the underside and pull out the necessary dashboard comfort parts to get to the shift lever and shift cable. Unplug the cable from the gear shift lever at the bracket, then remove the nuts holding the seal plate to the floor pan and pull the cable out through the opening in the floor. To install, push the new cable through the opening in the floor pan and fasten the seal plate to the studs with nuts tightened to 7 Nm (65 inch lbs.). Easy in the cable for the shift lever onto the shifter assembly bracket, giving it a good push so it stays in place and then align the floor lever toggle with the PARK position. Release the adjustment on the shift cable and then snap it onto the shift lever pin. Raise the vehicle once again and guide the shift cable into its support bracket. Park your machine by shifting into PARK, located at the back of the transmission manual shift lever and snap the cable onto the shift lever. Lower the vehicle, confirm the lever in PARK and tighten the adjustment screw to 7 Nm (65 inch lbs.). Next, make sure the shifter works as it should and reattach the cowl and undercover that you set aside for access.
