2006 Jeep Liberty Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Timing Chain on 2006 Jeep Liberty?
A: In order to replace and fit the timing chain, beforehand remove the negative battery terminal; drain cooling system. Disconnect the right and left cylinder head covers, rad fan shroud and swing the engine until the timing mark on the crankshaft damper is in line with TDC mark on the timing chain cover, cams sprockets V6 marks must be the 12 o'clock or horizontal position. Then, lift the power steering pump, reach the left and right cylinder heads access plugs, the oil fill housing, the crankshaft damper and the timing chain cover. Pull collar and pin the main chain tensioner, but remember to plug the hole in the oil pan while doing this or parts may fall in. Pull the secondary chain tensioners, camshaft position position sensor, and camshaft sprocket bolts, being careful of not damaging the camshaft target wheel. The left and right camshaft sprockets, the idler sprocket assembly bolt and the idler sprocket assembly and the crank sprocket are removed together by sliding the idler sprocket assembly forward (the primary and secondary chains are removed in a similar fashion, as are the pivoting tensioner arms and chain guides, and the primary chain tensioner). Check the sprockets of excessive wear, the wear of idler sprocket assembly, the grooved chain guides and tensioner arms, the contact evidence of secondary chain tensioner piston, and the primary chain tensioner plastic faces of damage. To install, compress the secondary chain tensioner piston, and release the ratchet pawl, and place the primary chain tensioner over the oil pump and bolt to 28 Nm. Install the chain tensioner arm on the right side, a chain guide on the left side, tightening everything with the bolts up to 28 Nm and then the chain tensioner arm on the left and the chain guide on the right side. Put on both secondary chains on the idler sprocket with plated links facing correctly and put in special tool 8429 to keep the chains on the idler sprocket. Install the primary chain links with the timing marks, grease the idler shaft and bushings, and the installation of all chains, crankshaft sprocket, and idler sprocket as one unit ( pays attention to the alignment and lubrication ). Make sure the plate between the left secondary chain tensioner and the block has been installed properly, install the both camshaft sprockets and torque the secondary chain tensioners at 28 Nm. It is necessary to remove locking pins at tensioners, without manual extension, tighten camshaft sprocket bolts up to 122 Nm by special tools. Turn the engine two revolutions to confirm the timing marks, oil all the chains and to check the idler gear end play replacing by way of a spare. At last, place in the timing chain cover, crankshaft damper, cylinder head covers, and large threaded access plug coated with Mopar Thread Sealant with Teflon, tighten to 81Nm, followed by installation of the oil fill housing, access plug at the left cylinder head, power steering pump, and cool down the cooling system then connect the negative connection to battery.
