2007 Jeep Liberty Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Timing Chain on 2007 Jeep Liberty?
A: Begin the removal process by lightly pressing the secondary chain tensioner piston until the piston's step is even with the tensioner body. Pop the pawl free in the opposite way from the tension spring and, through the side access hole, push the ratchet a little ways from the tensioner and put Special Tool 8514 lock pin into the front hole. Open the vise gently so that the piston spring's force comes on the lock pin. Place the main chain tensioner above the oil pump, slide bolts into the lower two holes in the tensioner bracket and tighten them to 28 Nm. Attach the right side chain tensioner arm with a Torx bolt and set the tightness to 28 Nm, after that attach the left side chain guide and tighten its bolts to 28 Nm. Follow that by installing the left tensioner arm with a Torx bolt screwed tight to 28 Nm and the right side chain guide, screwed in to 28 Nm as well. Set up both secondary chains on the idler sprocket, making sure you can see through the lower holes, both plated links. Wrap Special Tool 8429 around the chains to keep them from moving and make sure the primary chain double plated links match the 12 o'clock mark on the idler sprocket and that the single plated link matches the 6 o'clock mark on the crankshaft sprocket. Brush the idler shaft and bushings with clean engine oil and set it aside, then slide the primary chains and place the crankshaft and idler sprockets, connecting both chains and opening them in the block and cylinder head holes, fixing the chains together with an elastic strap. Bring the timing mark on the first gear to line up with the timing mark on the second gear, fully set the first gear into place, spread oil over the washer and tighten the idler sprocket bolts to 34 Nm. Slightly rotate the camshafts to allow the chain to be put in place, making sure the left camshaft's "L" dot fits the plated link and the right camshaft's "R" dot fits its plated link. Wipe off any excess oil on the camshaft sprocket bolt so you don't tighten too much, then attach both sprockets to the camshafts without securing them with bolts. Confirm that all plated links are lined up with the marks on each sprocket and that the "V6" on the camshaft sprockets is found at 12 o'clock. Put in both secondary chain tensioners and tighten their bolts to 28 Nm, after which release the locking pins by taking them out from the tensioners, but don't manually switch the tensioner ratchet to the extended mode. Attach Special Tool 6958 and Spanner with Adaptor Pins 8346 and tighten the bolts securing the left and right camshaft sprockets to 122 Nm. Turn the engine fully two times and confirm that the primary chain sprocket dot is at 12 o'clock, while the other timing marks are in position: primary chain crankshaft dot at 6 o'clock, secondary chain camshaft V6 marks at 12 o'clock and counterbalancer shaft drive gear dot at idler sprocket dot. Add engine oil to every chain, gauge the distance between the idler gear and the next sprocket with a micrometer and fix or change the idler gear if it exceeds or falls below 0.10 - 0.25 mm. Fit the timing chain cover and crankshaft damper, then fix the cylinder head covers, paying attention to the coating on the threaded plug in the proper cylinder head. Treat the large threaded access plug with Mopar Thread Sealant with Teflon, put it in the designated right cylinder head and tighten it to 81 Nm. Put in the oil fill housing, insert the left cylinder head access plug, set up the power steering pump, run the cooling system and attach the negative cable to the battery.
