2007 Chrysler Sebring Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering System on 2007 Chrysler Sebring?
A: Before starting any service or repair, empty most of the power steering fluid from the pump. Shift the floor carpet to one side so the intermediate shaft coupling at the column's bottom is within reach. Place the front wheels ahead and to the right and turn the steering wheel to the right to locate the intermediate shaft coupling bolt (3). Take out the bolt but keep the intermediate shaft (2) connected to the rack and pinion pinion shaft (4) whenever you can. Return both your front wheels and the steering wheel to where they will straight-ahead and secure the steering wheel in place with a steering wheel holder. Support the vehicle from beneath, undo the wheel mounting nuts (3) and then remove the tire and wheel (1). On the upper and lower rack and pinion sides, unscrew the nut (3) from the outer tie rod end (6) that's on the knuckle (2) and separate the outer tie rod end (1) from the knuckle (2) using Remover (2), Special Tool 9360. With the engine belly pan removed, next pull off the rear engine mount, before handling the front mount bolt. Unscrew the two bolts (5) joining the fore/aft crossmember (4) to the lower radiator support (3), plus the four bolts (1) attaching the fore/aft crossmember to the front crossmember and pull out the fore/aft crossmember. Undo the bolts (1) holding the hose routing clamps (2) to the rear crossmember, take out the tube nut (2) from the return hose (1) at the rack and pinion, unscrew the tube nut (3) from the pressure hose (4) at the rack and pinion and then remove the pressure hose (4). Remove the screws that hold the heat shield (1) over the right side of the rack and pinion (2) and lift it off. Place a mark on the body near each front crossmember bolt, so you'll know where to put it back once you're finished. Place a transmission jack beneath the crossmember (9), then take out the bolts that secure it to the body (6) and the screws connecting the front crossmember brackets (8) and liners (7) to the vehicle body. Reduce the crossmember position just enough to reach the coupling (1) on the rack and pinion pinion shaft (4) and remove it off the shaft. When required, clear the dash seals (3, 5) aside, then open the nuts (1) holding the rack and pinion (2) to the crossmember and finally lift the rack and pinion away.
