2008 Chrysler Sebring Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install and Align a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on the Crossmember on 2008 Chrysler Sebring?
A: Connect the rack and pinion to the crossmember and hold it in place with two bolts, tighten them to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.). Reinstall dash seals, if needed and make sure the power steering rack is in the center as it travels. It's important to attach the front suspension crossmember to the body in the same place it was removed so wheel alignment is not affected. When raising the rack and pinion, hold off on adding the intermediate shaft coupling. Allow the car to return to the ground and then add it, so it does not contact the rack and pinion or dash leaks. Match the crossmember to the places you have marked on the body by lifting it with a transmission jack. Move the seals at the dash panel to make sure they are in the correct position. Put the front crossmember reinforcement brackets over the rear bushings of the crossmember on sedans and screw them in but do not tighten yet. For convertibles, fit the front crossbrace/reinforcement bracket onto the crossmember at its rear bushings and body, then secure it with the mounting screws without tightening. Attach the four bolts holding the front crossmember to the car with its nuts and tighten them to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Sedans need their crossmember reinforcement bracket mounting screws tightened to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.), while the crossbrace/reinforcement bracket mounting screws in convertibles should be tightened to the same value. Unbolt the transmission jack and slip the heat shield under the rack and pinion, setting it in place with screws and push-pins tightened to 6 Nm (53 in. lbs.). Fit the pressure hose tube onto the rack and pinion, tightening the tube nut to 32 Nm (24 ft. lbs.) and do the same with the return hose tube. Clip the power steering hose holders to the crossmember and screw them in until the torque reaches 8 Nm (71 in. lbs.). Place the fore/aft crossmember and front engine mount through-bolt prior to installing the rear engine mount. If your car has it, fit the engine belly pan. Examine the boot surrounding the outer tie rod end seal before you secure it to the knuckle; if the boot has any damage, change the outer tie rod end. Insert both tie rod ends into the knuckle arm, add a new mounting nut on the stud, then tighten it until you reach 85 Nm (63 ft. lbs.). Place the tire and wheel assembly on both sides, tightening the wheel mounting nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) and next, lower the vehicle and remove the steering wheel holder. Ensure your front wheels are going straight ahead, slide the middle shaft over the rack and pinion pinion shaft and place it onto the pinion shaft. Rotate the steering wheel rightward until you can install the intermediate shaft coupling bolt easily and then tighten it to 42 Nm (31 ft. lbs.). Shift the floor protective carpet, straighten the steering wheel, top up and bleed the power steering system, watch for fluid leaks and have the wheels aligned as required.
