2007 Jeep Commander Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2007 Jeep Commander?
A: Before starting work on the rack and pinion, lock the steering wheel straight ahead and to the center using a steering wheel lock. First, siphon or drain the power steering, then remove the whole shaft by removing the coupler shaft bolt and freeing the shaft from the rack and pinion. Take out the oil drip tray after that and then move the pressure line and return line at the rack and pinion. Lift up and hold the vehicle high and then remove the front tires. Loose the jam nuts, take out the outer nut and use tool #8677 to remove the tie rod from the knuckle. After that, take out the front splash shield and, if your car is 4X4, also the front axle. After taking out the two bolts that hold the rack and pinion, move the rack and pinion right as much as possible to give room to the control arm, lower it and turn it left before you remove it from the car. When required, take off the ends of the outer tie rod from the rack and pinion.
