  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Parking Brake Cable on Rear Drum Brake on 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
    A: To work on the parking brake cable in rear drum brake vehicles, first separate and cut off the negative battery cable from its post before you begin. Avoid any movement by the vehicle by putting the tires up against one another after releasing the parking brake. Take out the center console and move the parking brake lever output cable upward until you can slip a pin punch into the lever mounting bracket, locking the automatic adjustment mechanism. Unhook both rear parking brake cables from the equalizer and get rid of the rear seat cushion. Push the rear carpeting forward to find the parking brake cables on the rear floor. Place a 1/2 inch (13 mm) wrench over the fingers of either parking brake cable and as you turn it, the cable should jump up and slide out from the bracket. Raise the vehicle, remove the nuts holding the rear wheels and take out the rear wheel and tire. Remove the brake drum and brake dust cap from the hub and bearing, take out the hub nut and slide the hub and bearing off the spindle. Loosen the parking brake cable from the actuating lever, press the locking fingers down on the cable retainer, pull out the cable, remove the two bolts securing the cable and brackets to the axle trailing arm and then undo the latches as well. After that, run the cable through the hole in the trailing arm and remove the parking brake cable with sealing grommet from the floor pan of the car.
