  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Parking Brake Cable on Rear Disc Brake on 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
    A: Begin the repair process by isolating the battery negative cable from its post on the battery before blocking your tires to make sure the vehicle does not move. Detach the center console, pull the output cable of the parking brake lever upward until a pin punch can go into the mounting bracket for the automatic adjustment and then unlock the mechanism to give slack to the cables. Also disconnect the rear equalizer at the parking brake cables and remove the rear cushion to make it easier to get to the cables under the carpeting. Use a 1/2 inch wrench to compress the retainer for either side of the parking brake cable, then gently pull the cable housing out of the bracket. Lift and support the vehicle, undo the wheel mounting nuts and bring off the rear wheel and tire. Loosen and remove the guide pins bolts holding the caliper, then place the caliper somewhere safe so the flex hose isn't stressed. Remove the clip that holds the brake rotor and the rotor itself, unscrew the dust cap nut and detach the nut on the spindle hub to pull them both from the spindle. Lift or pull out the upper return spring, followed by pushing and removing the shoe hold-down clips, then divide the shoes to release them from the anchor and remove them as one unit. Lift the parking brake actuator lever off its cable, push down to lock the link fingers on the cable retainer with a 1/2 inch (13 mm) offset box wrench and take the cable off the rear brake adapter. Remove the bolts attaching the cable to the axle trailing arm last, take the cable out of the arm and pull it through the floor pan with its sealing grommet.
