2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Power Steering Pump on 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: First, remove any dirt or debris from the open end of the power steering pressure hose and the pump port using a clean, fluffy towel, put new O-rings in place and thoroughly lubricate them with clean power steering fluid before installing the pump. Move the cooling module forward and set the power steering pump into its correct position, placing the steel support bracket behind the pump. Pass the three bolts through the bracket and insert the pump into the threaded engine cover, not tightening them and then set the two bracket bolts to the engine, tightening them to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Following this, use a torque wrench to tighten each pump mounting bolt to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.), making sure the hose is kept above the timing chain cover and out of harm's way on other components. Latch the end of the hose onto the pump supply, tighten up the clamp and secure it at the point where they meet. Lift the vehicle, fasten the pressure hose's end to the pump and apply the tube nut from the fluid pressure hose to the pump. Connect your long extension to the torque wrench, fitting it with a crowfoot wrench and tighten the pressure hose tube nut to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.). Affix the four bolts connecting the A/C compressor to the engine, tighten them to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.) and link up the A/C compressor's wiring connectors, after that install the A/C drive belt. Secure the drive-belt splash shield to the vehicle body with fasteners and a single fastener to the front suspension crossmember. If you took them out before, install the fasteners connecting the top of the fascia to the lower reinforcement and the fastener for the wheel house splash shield to the drive belt splash shield. Install your tire and wheel and fasten the wheel mounting nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Next, lower the vehicle and take out the bungee cord so you can move the cooling module back into its slots. After removing them, put the right side bolts back into the lower radiator panel facing the cooling module and fasten it in front. Attach the ambient temperature sensor to the radiator closure panel, the hood weather-strip across the panel and next set the grille up front on your car. After filling and bleeding the power steering system, watch for signs of leakage.
