2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove the Wheel Bearing and Wheel Hub from the Steering Knuckle on 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before removing what's left from the steering knuckle, first take it out of the vehicle. With the wheel removed, press Special Tool C-4150A into each of the three wheel studs and use Press (1) to remove each stud one at a time from the hub flange. Following the loosening of the studs, rotate the hub so the studs match the notch on the bearing retainer plate and take them out through the notch. Ensure the hub is in place so the empty stud mounting holes are turned toward the flange, so the bearing splitter can be fitted behind it. Lay the Bearing Splitter in place with Special Tool 1130, then use your hands to tighten the nuts. Place your steering knuckle with the face toward the ground in an arbor press connected to the bearing splitter, checking that the press blocks do not get in the way of the wheel hub. Grab Special Tool 6644-2 and use Remover/Installer in its small setting at the hub, then gently lower the ram on your pressing tool to remove the hub, bearing and knuckle in one piece. With the splitter removed, get rid of the three bolts holding the bearing retainer plate to the front arm and lift off the plate. Before clamping the arbor press, make sure all is clear under the bearing plate. Place the Remover/Installer, Special Tool MB-990799, on the outer part of the bearing and gently lower the arbor press to release the bearing from the knuckle. Begin by holding the bearing race between the hub flange and the Bearing Splitter, then drop in the hub and all three pieces into the arbor press, with space for the wheel hub. After that, use Remover/Installer, Special Tool 6644-2, to fit over the hub and then lower the arbor press to release the hub from its place in the race.
