2009 Dodge Dakota Brake Drum Parts and Q&A
Q: When Should Brake Drum Components Be Inspected and Replaced on 2009 Dodge Dakota?
A: Both riveted and bonded brake shoes are replaced when their freshly riveted lining or bonded section approaches minimum thickness which are 0.78 mm and 1.6 mm, respectively. Check the contact pattern on the lining by looking for bent shoes or signs of a tapered drum, as a straight line contact shows the drum is ok and no bent shoes are present; if the lining shows contact on only one side, replace the shoes and for a tapered drum, check for runout. If the star wheel, threads or components of the adjuster screw are damaged or if rust or corrosion is severe, the assembly should be replaced. Throw away the brake springs and retainer pieces if they are worn, oddly bent or collapsed and put in new springs if there is brake drag due to oil passing over them. Examine the brake shoe contact pads mounted on the support plate and switch out the plate should any pads be too worn, rusted out, bent or warped.
