2009 Jeep Wrangler Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2009 Jeep Wrangler?
A: First, place the rack and pinion in position on the frame rail and bolt it tight at 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs). After that, adjust and secure the pitman arm with a nut that has been tightened to 251 Nm (185 ft. lbs.). Should the assembly need to be removed, take out the axle assembly to fit the track bar at the frame rail, hold it with the nut and bolt at the bracket and tighten the bolt to 169 Nm (125 ft. lbs.). After setting the track bar at the frame, get rid of the support and let the vehicle sit on the floor. Line up the shaft of the column with the position on the rack and pinion, insert a new coupler pinch bolt and tighten it to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Link the steering tube/hoses to the rack and pinion and tighten them up to 36 Nm (27 ft. lbs.), following the maker's directions. Place the coolant bottle back into place, fill the power steering system to the recommended level and verify the toe setting.
