2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser Tie Rod End Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair an Outer Tie Rod End on 2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: If the jam nut (2) is not on the inner tie rod (1) thread yet, install it first and make sure the collar (5) is between the inner rod and the jam nut, with the collar's flat side against the jam nut and the open side facing the outer tie rod (4). Then, install the collar to the inner tie rod (1) if it is not there yet. Put the outer tie rod onto the inner tie rod the same number of rotations as it had when installed. Position the collar at the far end of the outer tie rod and place the jam nut over the inner rod and push it down far enough to position the collar in place for now. Attach the tie rod heat shield (4) to the end of the knuckle arm (3) with the hole in the shield facing the tie rod end's hole. Insert the outer tie rod (1) ball stud into the knuckle arm (3) and put the tie rod mounting nut (2) over the stud. As you hold the tie rod end stud with a wrench, tighten the nut to 55 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) using a wrench or crowfoot wrench. Then, slide in the tire and wheel assembly (1) and put the wheel mounting nuts (3) to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Lower your car and change the wheel toe setting in front. Last, tighten the tie rod jam nut to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.) after you have finished setting the wheel toe.
