Prior to uninstalling the driver air bag, first unconnect and isolate the battery's negative cable and wait for two minutes to allow the air bag system reserve capacitor to discharge, thereby avoiding a potentially dangerous and possibly fatal accidental deployment. On the passenger side of the
Steering Wheel, unclip and remove the two screw covers along with the attendant screws to grant access to the driver air bag. When detaching the connector from the driver air bag or separating the horn feed pigtail from the steering wheel wire harness connector, be careful to avoid tugging on the feed pigtail wire, as such handling may harm its membrane or internal feed circuit. Slowly pull the air bag back about an inch to break free the two air bag squib connectors along with the horn connector, then detach the driver air bag from the steering column. The driver air bag trim cover may be serviced independently; if, for example, the horn switch is faulty or the trim cover is damaged, the air bag cushion assembly can be installed onto a new trim cover. If the air bag is faulty, the driver air bag and its trim cover must be exchanged together as a single assembly.
