Before doing any repairs, follow the steps in Powertrain Management to release pressure from the vehicle's fuel system. Remove the negative terminal from the battery, take out the air cleaner housing and its attached hose and then take off the upper
Intake Manifold. After that, take off the cylinder head covers and spark plugs and then remove the rocker arm and shaft assembly. Increase the
Crankshaft by turning clockwise until the number 1
Piston reaches the top point known as TDC during compression. After putting an air hose onto the number 1 spark plug adapter, pump air in at the level of 90 to 100 psi to position the valves for servicing. Attach adapter 6527 or an equal one to Tool MD 998772A to press on the spring and take out the valve locks, valve springs and retainer. Take out the valve stem seals by using a valve stem seal tool. Press the new valve stem seal/valve spring seat in place on the valve guide, straight down following the guide of the valve stem. Just compress the spring until you can put in the valve retainer locks, but make sure you don't remove the garter spring at the valve stem seal top. Work through the rest of the cylinders in the sequence 1-2-3-4-5-6, making certain that each piston is at TDC on the valve spring you are working on. After installing the valve stem seal, remove the spark plug adapter tool, use Special Tool MD 998772A and put the rocker arm and shaft assembly back together. Having prepared the last parts, put on the cylinder head covers,
Ignition Coils and all necessary wires, reinstall the upper intake manifold and then place the negative cable again.
