Before removing the steering wheel, put the tires straight and turn off the negative remote cable on the battery. After that, unscrew the back of the steering wheel, carefully pull the speed control pods out and remove the connecting wires. Eliminate the bolts from the
Air Bag module that holds it on the steering wheel, lift it out and open the second latch to pull the air bag connector off without touching the wires with metal tools. Take the horn wire out of the mounting bracket for the air bag module and cut the speed control wires loose from beneath the bracket and from the wire guides. Unscrew the steering wheel nut and slide the wheel puller under the wheel, making sure all wires are kept safe and moving slowly through the steering wheel armature. When putting in the module, position the road wheels straight, position the
Clock Spring using the centering indicator and place the turn signal stalk at neutral. Fix the wires through the same hole in the steering wheel armature, fit the steering wheel in place, tighten it to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.), adjust so the driving key in the steering wheel matches the slot in the Clock Spring rotor and the block tooth on the steering wheel hub matches the corresponding missing tooth on the steering column shaft. Under the horn, run the wires for the speed control, thread them through the speed control switch pockets and hook them up to the switches which you should bolt down with 1.7 ± 1 Nm (15 ± 10 in. lbs.) torque. Connect the two electrical leads first and then push the secondary latch to be sure the wires stay safe while you connect the air bag. Connect the air bag module bolts first to the left side, torquing to 9 to 10 Nm (80 to 90 in. lbs.), perform the air bag system tests as described and only then reconnect the battery negative remote cable.
