To begin servicing and repairing the Clock Spring assembly, turn the front road wheels forward and rotate the
Steering Wheel a full turn to the right while locking the column with the key in the ignition. Raise the hood and unhook the negative end of the battery from the car. Make sure the car sits without starting for two minutes so that the capacitor can empty before pulling out the non-deployed module. To get to the Clock Spring wiring, first remove both the steering wheel and the shrouds around the upper and lower steering column. After that, remove the multi-function switch and knock off the 7-way connector linking the Clock Spring to the wiring harness that goes to the instrument panel. Gently raise the tab on the top latch to pull out the Clock Spring; a faulty one needs to be changed. Spin the Clock Spring rotor one-half turn to the left and anchor it in the center by feeding a paper clip into the hole at the 10 o'clock position. Before installation, make sure the steering wheel turns all the way to right, the column is locked and the turn signal stalk is facing straight ahead. If you are reusing the Clock Spring, loosen the wire, then turn the rotor a half turn (180 degrees) clockwise before setting it on the column. When fitting a new Clock Spring, set the two front wheels in line and unscrew the grenade pin. Insert the Clock Spring into the instrument panel harness, make sure the wiring is routed well and secure the connectors properly. Install both steering column shrouds to be sure all the wires are safely inside. Once you have the steering wheel in position, join the flats from the wheel with the Clock Spring and pass all the leads for the
Air Bag, horn and speed control through the widest hole in the dash frame, to keep them safe. Attach both the wires from the speed control to the switch by going underneath and behind the driver air bag mounting tabs. Connect the person using the tool: attach the car's horn lead and driver air bag lead wires to the air bag, then set the driver air bag in place. For now, just attach the positive cable to the block outside the car, close the hood and check how the car and equipment perform.
