How to Safely Service and Assemble a Steering Column on Chrysler Crossfire?

Before starting to work on the steering system, disarm the air bags to keep any accidents from happening. The first thing to do is detach the negative battery cable and then remove the left lower instrument cluster from under the steering column. After that, get rid of the driver air bag screws, place the car at the front alignment, unscrew the steering wheel bolt and get the steering wheel out. After that, unscrew the Clock Spring, cluster, steering lock, speed control and multifunction switches, then take out the trim ring around the column. After detaching the pinch bolt, take out the mounting bolts and nuts underneath and on top of the steering column. Lift the steering column from the instrument panel, but be careful not to touch the sensitive intermediate shaft. You should start by taking out the pinch screw from the center shaft, as well as the retaining ring, the disk spring and the thrust ring for taking apart. Tilt the intermediate shaft outward a bit to remove both rings, followed by pressing the ball bearing out of the housing using the intermediate shaft. Assemble the unit by putting the bearing in the column, installing the shaft and stilling the locking ring in place. Assemble the thrust ring and locking ring on the intermediate shaft first and then add the thrust ring with a disk spring so that it applies the right preload. Set the retaining ring on the intermediate shaft and push it down as you push the disk spring down until it is completely pre-compressed. Screw the lower tube to the upper one, push the lower intermediate shaft on the upper shaft and put the bolt and nut in place. Keep the drive shaft components covered and press the lower intermediate shaft into the upper shaft until the disk spring is completely loaded. Test how much resistance there is in the drive shaft before tightening the bolt. Prior to installing the air bag, make sure it is turned off, install the steering column and secure it with lower nuts and upper bolts tightened according to the right torque values. Attach the pinch bolt, connect the Clock Spring electrical connector, install the column trim ring, screw in the speed control and multifunction switches, connect the instrument panel wires, fit the cluster and its screws, screw in the steering wheel, install the screws on the driver air bag rim and assemble the left lower instrument panel. Also, attach the negative battery cable in place to finish the process.

To take out the steering column, make sure the front wheels are facing forward, disconnect the car's negative battery lead and let it stand for two minutes for the air bag reserve capacitor to release its power. Take off the screws that secure the air bag, lift it from its holder and unplug the air bag squib connectors and horn connector before you move it. Disconnect the speed control wiring from the Clock Spring and after that, remove both the steering wheel nut and the damper. With a standard wheel puller, take out the steering wheel, reach the knee blocker air bag and remove the three screws securing the lower shroud to the upper shroud and column. Press gently at the center of each side between the shrouds to release the inner locks, then free the upper and lower shrouds. Take the column wiring harness clip off the left of the column and then unscrew the column from the bottom. Once that's done, slide the housing with the multi-function switch off the column. Before removing the intermediate shaft, loosen the hairpin at the end of the coupling pinch bolt, unscrew the nut and take out the pinch bolt. Unscrew the four nuts securing the steering column to the dash panel and then release the column. For installation, put the steering column onto the mounting studs and make sure the four nuts are 12 Nm (105 inch lbs) tight. After pulling the coupling pinch loop onto the intermediate shaft, put on the coupling pinch bolt, tighten it to 28 Nm and then install the hairpin. Also, insert the mounting screw into the switch mounting housing and tighten it to 1.9 Nm (17 inch lbs.). Insert the wiring harness routing clip into the column and mount the column shrouds, joining them together at the locking locations, after which use the center screw and the two outer screws to secure the lower shroud; tighten all screws to 2 Nm (18 inch lbs.). Visually check the shroud surfaces and correct any gaps that are too wide. Fix the knee blocker air bag and all related pieces in place, line up the splines on the steering hub and shaft and place the steering wheel on the column shaft. Attach both the damper and steering wheel retaining bolt, tightening each to the recommended torque which is 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). Join the speed control wire to the Clock Spring and connect the two air bag squibs and horn wire to the driver air bag. Secure the air bag to the steering wheel and tighten every screw to 10 Nm (90 inch lbs.). After that, link the negative battery cable to the post and try all the steering column components to ensure everything is working right before road testing the vehicle for safe steering.
