Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on Chrysler 300?
A:
You need to connect the negative cable from the battery to an insulating block to service and repair the all-wheel-drive rack and pinion. Pour the power steering fluid from the pump reservoir after that, before raising and supporting the vehicle. Take out the wheel mounting nuts and remove both front tires and wheels. Be careful not to twist the bellows at the inner tie rod as you loosen the jam nut and turn the inner tie rod. And remember to remove the clamp and see if the bellows is moving freely before moving the inner tie rod. At both outer ends, first loosen the jam nut on the tie rod and then take out the nut holding the outer tie rod end at each knuckle. Use Remover 9360 to take out the tie rod from every knuckle. Remove the bolts that hold the steering coupler pinch to the rack and pinion, undo the nut on the return hose at the gear and take out the return hose. Release the pressure hose from the rack and pinion by undoing the nut on the pressure hose tube. Remove the screws that hold the mount in place and remove the heat shield above each inner tie rod bellows. After that, unscrew the upper mounting bolt and nut on the rack and pinion, then remove the lower ones. Remove the rack and pinion as the last step. If you need to, take off the outer tie rods from the gear and record how many revolutions each tie rod makes to help during assembly of the new gear.
Q: How to Remove and Install a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on Chrysler Crossfire?
A:
Before taking out the rack and pinion, drain the fluid from the power steering pump reservoir and lift and support the vehicle. Separate the drag link/tie rod from the pitman arm and get out the left front cross brace. Remove the line connected to the power steering return and remove the high-pressure line. The steering wheel needs to be fixed in place during replacement to protect the clock spring contact. After taking out the ignition key, remove the pinch bolt in the steering coupling and take off the steering shaft from the rack and pinion. After that, take out the engine ground strap from the frame member and lower engine mounting bolts on each engine mount. Support the left side of the engine with a jack and gently raise it by about 40 mm so that you don't damage the lower steering shaft on vehicles with a single column. Take out the three bolts that hold the rack and pinion to the vehicle, pull the rack and pinion from the steering shaft gently and remove it from the car. You should align the markings on the steering shaft and housing cover to the center, not applying force to the lower steering shaft during installation. Connect the rack and pinion coupling to the steering shaft before steadying it with the screws provided. Begin the rack and pinion hardware has to be replaced when doing service because they are torque to yield. Put the lower steering shaft through the steering coupling and join the gear bolt to the vehicle, with a tightening force of 70 to 10 Nm. Position the engine so that the mounts are tightened down to 25 Nm. Bind the ground strap to the frame, insert and tighten the pinch bolt on the steering coupling to 16-20 Nm and link the high-pressure hose before you tighten to 30 Nm, finishing with the return line tightened to 40 Nm. After that, fit the drag link/tie rod and the left front cross brace and bleed the steering pump from the power steering system.
