The first thing to do is to remove the car battery's negative terminal and lift the vehicle to reach the clutch. Taking out the serpentine
Drive Belt, separate the engine wire harness connector from the clutch coil pigtail wire connector on the compressor. For cars with 3.3L and 3.8L engines, remove the retainer from the engine wire harness compressor clutch coil bracket on the compressor. All compressor mounting screws should be removed, except that on the upper left which only needs to be partly loosened so the compressor leans down for the clutch. Unscrew the three bolts and one nut on your 3.3L or 3.8L engine that secure the compressor and tip it down to reach the clutch. Lift out the compressor shaft bolt, using a band-type oil filter wrench or strap wrench as necessary and tap the clutch plate gently with a plastic hammer to pull it out along with any shim(s). Take out the external snap ring with snap ring pliers and slide the pulley and clutch coil off the compressor. For installation, line up the dowel pin in the clutch coil with the hole in the compressor front cover, so the pigtail wires are not trapped and place a new snap ring so the bevel part faces outward. Hold the clutch coil with a snap ring and tighten the screw that holds the connector for the pigtail wire. Execute the pulley, tapping gently if needed and attach it using a brand new snap ring. If you are using the same clutch plate and pulley, set back the same original shim(s); if upgrading the Harley, put in a set of 1.0-mm shims as a trial. Set the clutch plate in place and fasten the nut of the compressor shaft to 17.5 Nm. If you put in new parts, look at the gap between the clutch plate and pulley. First, put the four screws on the 2.4L engine loosely; then, tighten them to 28 Nm. With the 3.3L and 3.8L engines, screw all four fasteners in loosely and follow the sequence to tighten them all to 54 Nm. Attach the engine wire harness connector, mount the serpentine belt again, raise the vehicle and link the negative battery cable. After new clutch components are added, they must be burnished.
