Oxygen Sensor is found in Dodge Magnum cars and it is very important as it measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust stream which is vital in determining the air to fuel mixture that is supplied to the vehicle engine in order to burn the fuel efficiently and minimize production of gases that are not healthy to the environment. By outputting voltage signal dependent on the degree of oxygen in the exhaust gases, it assists the engine to work in 'closed loop' fashion which further improves the efficiency of the catalytic converter. Oxygen sensors fitted in Dodge Magnum models can be of zirconium dioxide base and may consist of narrow-band and wide-band oxygen sensors. Some of the sensors deliver either of the rich/lean signals while others can offer a wide bandwidth of the air-fuel mixture signals. The main difference is to be found in the modulation of their operation, wideband sensors relay finer detail to the engine control unit. Periodically, these sensors may become contaminated, which will cause increase in emissions and fuel consumption, among other problems.

Dodge Magnum Oxygen Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Ensure Proper Installation and Avoid Driveability Issues When Replacing an Oxygen Sensor on Dodge Magnum?
    A:
When putting in a new O2 Sensor, memory in the PCM RAM should be cleared, either by disconnecting the PCM C-1 connector or by temporarily removing the Battery negative terminal, to prevent problems with driveability. Don't use grease on the oxygen sensor electrical connector and never try to solder the sensor wire harness. There are two oxygen sensors, each heated, located in the Exhaust Manifolds in the vehicle's engine. When removing the sensor, clean the exhaust manifold using an 18 mm X 1.5 + 6E tap. Should you reuse the original sensor, put a small amount of anti-seize compound, for example Loctite 771-64, onto the sensor threads; sensors purchased new already have the coating. Turn the sensor screw to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) with a torque wrench, hook up the electrical cable from the heated oxygen sensor, bring the car down to the ground and connect the negative Battery Cable.
  • Q: What Safety Measures Are Essential When Removing an Oxygen Sensor from an Engine on Dodge Magnum?
    A:
There are two heated oxygen sensors placed, one in each Exhaust Manifold, in the engine. It is important not to put grease on the oxygen sensor electrical connector and not to solder the sensor's wiring harness. Since the exhaust manifold, exhaust pipes and Catalytic Converter heat up a lot during the engine's operation, the engine must cool down before you can remove the oxygen sensor. Take care not to tug on the wire going into the sensor when you disconnect its electrical connector. Step one is to release the negative Battery Cable and after that, raise and support the vehicle. After that, remove the electrical harness connecting the heated oxygen sensor, then take the sensor out using a Snap-On YA8875 or a crow foot wrench.
