The Dodge Nitro Airbag systems are inflatable cushions designed to protect the occupants from injuries that could occur during a collision by providing a soft and energy-absorbing cushion between hard interior surfaces and the passengers. All Dodge Nitro models feature an Airbag in the steering wheel for the driver and in the dashboard for the front passenger, with each Airbag equipped with crash sensors, an electronic controller and a pyrotechnic inflation module that work together to inflate in milliseconds when the data from the crash sensors trigger the appropriate set of threshold conditions. Folded when not in use, the flexible fabric bag fills up quickly with the gas generated by the inflation module and deflates once it has cushioned the occupant. Keep foreign materials from the driver air bag or between the air bag and the trim cover, because this might cause injury to occupants when the air bag deploys. The driver air bag trim cover is not meant to be painted since paint could affect the material's behavior during deployment. If you have an air bag that fails or becomes damaged, but doesn't inflate, follow the procedures provided for cases without deployed supplemental restraints. If an air bag deploys, use the steps in the service description following deployment before removing it. Set the driver's air bag near the Steering Wheel so you can reconnect the cables at the rear of the air bag box. Line up each color-coded keyed air bag wire connector from the driver's Clock Spring to the matching air bag inflator receptacles and push them together until they lock. Slot the driver air bag into the steering wheel hub, making sure none of the Clock Spring's attached wires is squashed. Pull the lower air bag wire loop onto the six o'clock hook of the steering wheel armature lower hook. After you pull aside the air bag, reach the electrical connectors at the rear of the air bag housing, making sure not to touch the Clock Spring pigtail wires or press on the connector insulator. Lift the retaining lock straight up and pull to remove the Clock Spring driver air bag pigtail. Then take out the insulators on the air bag inflator connector receptacles. Finally, pull the driver air bag off the steering wheel. Should the steering wheel air bag deploy, first replace the Clock Spring and then inspect the steering column.
