Dodge Stratus Brake Shoe Set Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
What steps should be taken to clean and inspect a Brake Shoe Set and its components on Dodge Stratus?
    A:
The metal part of the brake shoes must be clean and not bent. If the lining is not contacting fully from heel to toe, replacing it is necessary. The combined thickness of the leading and trailing brake shoe and lining should be measured for which the specifications are different. Both leading brake shoe rim and lining combined thickness must not be less than 3.0 mm and for trailing brake shoe it is 2.8 mm or less. When the toe or heel of the shoes does not touch the ground, the shoe grinding is incorrect. Check and clean the brake support plate and self-adjusting mechanism, if applicable. Confirm that the quadrant can rotate freely through the entire tooth contact range and slide the full distance of its mounting slot. Check the quadrant spring for excessive wear or damage. Confirm that the knurled pin is securely attached and undamaged. Check the adjuster for excessive wear or damage and replace as necessary. If they are reusable, apply a light coat of Mopar Multi-Purpose Lubricant or similar between the quadrant and adjuster mechanism strut. Substitute any old spring that has overheated or become damaged, which shows paint colour discolouration or distorted end coils. When the brake drums were removed, visually inspect the wheel cylinder boots for brake fluid leaks, cuts, tears, or heat cracks. If defective, clean and inspect the wheel cylinders, and install new parts. When a wheel cylinder leaks and the lining is soaked with brake fluid, the brake shoes must be replaced.
  • Q:
How to service and repair the rear Brake Shoe Set on Dodge Stratus?
    A:
Before raising the car to service and repairing the rear drum brake shoes, release the parking brake. Start by lifting the car and taking off both rear wheel and tire assemblies. After that, take off the brake drums from both sides. It can be useful first to install the new part on one side to help with disassembly of the other side. Remove the dust cap from the hub and bearing, the hub and bearing retaining nut, then slide the hub and bearing off the spindle. Press in the cable return spring, and detach the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever. Next, compress and remove the shoe hold-down springs and the lower return spring. Taking off the shoe assembly from the support plate remove adjuster spring from leading shoe and lever pawl, lever pawl from pivot on leading shoe and, the adjuster and upper spring. When you work on/clean the brake components, be careful/finally; that is to say, the process must be damp; to clarify, moist the components with a mist of water and wipe the parts after that; meaning, you should not dry clean the parts. Finally further, dispose the wet wastes into an impermeable bag/container. Check Rear Brake Shoe Lining for Proper Contact; Replace Shoes If There is No Contact The brake support plate and shoe adjuster screw must be cleaned and checked. Apply a very thin film of Mopers Multi-Purpose Grease for ATF to the threads of the self-adjuster. Also, replace the corroded adjuster screw. Note: Left-hand adjuster screws have a left-hand thread and vice versa. Replace damaged or overheated return or hold-down springs with new ones as necessary. For installation, grease the six contact areas of shoe on the support plate and anchor with Mopers Brake Lubricant. Place a leading and a trailing shoe on the bench, install the adjuster and upper spring, slide the lever pawl under the adjuster and install the adjuster spring. Attach the pre-assembled brake shoe assembly to the brake support plate after installing the lower return spring. Insert both the shoe hold-down pins from the back through the support plate and shoes, compressing and installing the shoe hold-down springs on the pins. In order to install the parking brake cable on the parking brake lever, compress the return spring and install the cable below the tab. Place the cable into the cable guide connected to the anchor retaining plate. Then, slide the hub and bearing onto the spindle and place on the retaining nut. Tighten the retaining nut to a torque of 250Nm (185ft.lbs). Put the hub and bearing dust cap in place. Adjust the brake shoe to the drum diameter (with the brake shoe gauge) and fit in the brake drum. At last, install the two assemblies of tire and wheel and torque the wheel mounting nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.), while slowly spinning the wheels to confirm that the brake drum lightly drags on the shoes. Lower the vehicle and road test, while checking that the automatic-adjuster continues to adjust the brakes.
