Q: How to Remove and Install an Ignition Lock Cylinder on 2000 Dodge Durango?
A: Before removing the ignition lock cylinder, put the ignition key in the cylinder and connect the key. Next, disconnect the black cable from the battery's negative terminal and, if your vehicle has a tilt column, turn the tilt lever counterclockwise till it is free. After that, remove the upper and lower covers from the steering column and, if you are driving an automatic, set the shifter to Park. A retaining pin is found beside the key cylinder assembly; rotate the key to the Run mode, push the pin and pull the cylinder from the switch. Just in case the ignition key lock cylinder is being changed, continue with these steps. If you are switching both parts, perform every step that is given. Turn the flag on the rear of the ignition switch to Run to let the tang on the key cylinder lock into the ignition switch. Rotate the ignition key clockwise and, when the retaining pin is depressed, slide the key back until it's in the switch and the pin locks. After you engage the switch, turn the key to Off or Lock and then try to pull the cylinder to ensure it is not loose. If your car is an automatic transmission, put the shifter into Park first, then secure the ignition switch to the steering column while the park lock dowel pin is in place in the park lock linkage. Press the switch next to your ignition switch and align the flag with your steering column to use the steering wheel lock lever by turning the key to Lock mode. Turn off the ignition by putting the switch in Lock position, with the column lock flag aligned to the vertical tips on the switch. Apply a light cover of grease to the park lock dowel pin and park lock slider linkage, press the park lock slider linkage all the way forward and move it back a quarter inch for the final placement. Add grease to both the column lock flag and the shaft at the flag's base, then slide the ignition switch onto the matching openings on the steering column so that the park lock dowel pin passes through the slot on the park lock slider linkage and the flag is above the steering wheel lock lever. Line up the dowel pins on the switch behind it with the holes on the steering column, insert the three screws and tighten them to 2 Nm ± 0.5 Nm (17 in. lbs. ± 5 in. lbs.). After installing the ignition switch, try turning the ignition key from lock to On; if the park lock slider doesn't move in the slider slot, allowing the shift lever out of Park, remove and reinstall the ignition switch. Connect each electrical connector to the ignition switch, halo lamp and, if it has one, "Prndl," and make certain the switch locking tabs are correctly seated in the connectors. Put the covers onto the steering column, seal them with screws tightened to 2 Nm (17 in. lbs.), add the tilt column lever if present, reattach the negative cable to the battery and test the halo light to make sure it works properly. When the key is put in Lock mode, the shifter must lock in Park and release in On mode. The ignition switch should respond as follows in all its positions: Accessory, Lock, Off, On, Run and Start. Turning the key to Lock should lock the steering wheel and it should unlock when the key moves to On.
