2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Parking Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Parking Brake Shoe on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: For service or repair on the parking brake shoe, initially lock the park brake lever and lift the vehicle. Take out the rear wheel and tire by first removing the caliper and its anchor attached together. The rubber access plug is in the back of the rear disc brake splash shield. Remove it. Place the brake adjuster on top of the star wheel and turn it to pull out the parking brake shoes when needed. Remove the rotor from the wheel hub flange, use needle nose pliers to remove the lower shoe from the shoe/adjuster spring and take the upper shoe off the return or shoe spring, again using the brake pliers. Squeeze the clip ends together, then glide the clip along until the head of the pin is outside the notch and remove both pieces. Now that the shoes and adjuster are removed, fit the new shoes to the splash shield, storing them with their pins and clips in the parking brake actuator. Insert the screw assembly and press both sides of the notch into the shoes so the star wheel matches the hole in the shield. With needle nose pliers, secure the lower shoe to the shoe spring and with brake pliers, attach the upper shoe to the shoe spring. Mount the rotor and caliper anchor and keep the anchor bolts tightened to 90 - 115 Nm (66 - 85 ft. lbs.). First, press the park brake lever to open the system, adjust the parking brake shoes and finally install the wheel and tire assembly. Take the car down to the ground and test that the parking brake is working correctly.
