2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Parking Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Parking Brake Shoe on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Park the car, turn on the brake lever, raise the vehicle and unlock it. Remove the rear wheel and tire, then take out the caliper and anchor as an assembly. Get rid of the rubber access plug located at the back of the rear disc brake cover. If required, raise the parking brake shoes with a brake adjuster tool by fixing it to the top of the star wheel and turning it. Get out the rotor from the axle hub flange, then release the lower shoe to shoe spring/adjuster spring using needle nose pliers and the upper shoe to shoe spring/return spring with brake pliers. Remove these hold-down clips and pins by squeezing their ends, sliding the clip all the way so the head of the pin passes through the narrow part of the notch and then taking the clip and pin out. After that, take out the shoes and adjust the brakes. Before you install, put the shoes over the splash guard with the hold down clips and pins to ensure they are joined to the park brake actuator. Coat the adjuster screw assembly with grease, then fit the notched ends into the shoes and center the star wheel in the hole on the shield. Grab the lower shoe spring with needle nose pliers and grab the upper shoe spring with brake pliers. Set in the rotor and caliper anchor assembly and fix the anchor bolts to 90 - 115 Nm (66 - 85 ft. lbs.). Pull up on the park brake lever, replace the parking brake shoes and after that, install the wheel and tire. Drive to the ground and then apply the parking brake to check that it works properly.
