2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Clock Spring Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Service and Repair a Clock Spring Assembly on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Always be careful not to set a non-deployed air bag downwards onto a hard object, because it may become active and lead to injuries if you are not careful. Disconnect and disengage the negative battery cable to turn off the front air bag and leave the system capacitor to drain for two minutes before you continue. Put the front road wheels in line with your target, then rotate the steering wheel a half turn to the right and engage the column with the ignition lock. Pull up the hood and take off the negative cable from the battery. For two minutes, keep the steering column covered with the shrouds and wait before replacing the steering wheel to uncover the Clock Spring's wiring. Get rid of the multi-function switch and unplug the 7-way connector between the Clock Spring and the instrument panel wiring harness. If the Clock Spring is malfunctioning, lift the top latch tab slightly and change it, because you can't fix it. Turn the rotor half way to the left and use a paper clip wire to lock it at its center point, passing the wire through the 10 O'clock hole. Before installing, the steering wheel must be at a position half turned to the right, the column should be locked and the turn signal stalk should be in its neutral position. Should you reuse the Clock Spring, first take the locking wire out and rotate it half turn to the right before you fix it in place. After you've installed the new Clock Spring, line up the front wheels in front of you and remove or pull out the grenade pin. Attach the Clock Spring to the harness of the instrument panel so wiring is properly routed and all connectors and locks are active. Replace the steering column shrouds, keeping all wires inside them and then install the steering wheel, lining up its flats with the Clock Spring and horn, air bag and speed control leads through the large slot. After the wires are under the air bag's mounting tabs, join the speed control wires to the switch and the air bag lead and horn lead wires to the air bag module. Place the air bag module in the car, but do not attach the negative battery wire until all important system tests have been carried out. Close the hood and perform another check on how the vehicle and its systems work.
