2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Air Bag Control Module Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Safely Remove and Install an Air Bag Control Module on 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: The Air Bag Control Module, referred to as the Occupant Restraint Controller, includes the sensor and a safing sensor that make the front air bags possible. When removing or installing anything in the front air bag system, always detach and disconnect the battery negative cable before starting, to make sure there is no accidental deployment and possible personal injury. After discharging the front air bag system's capacitor for two minutes, start to remove any electronic components. Open the hood and then break the link between the negative battery cable and the car. After that, take out the console, then remove the module by unscrewing the nuts and disconnecting the ORC 23-way wire. After the ORC is out, put the ORC connector in place while making sure all locking tabs are secured. Secure the ORC in the bracket, so the arrow points towards the front; use only the included nuts and check their torque at 9.6 to 14 Nm (85 to 125 in. lbs.). Attach the center console assembly, however, do not secure the battery negative cable until it has been diagnosed and checked. Close the hood and then make sure both the car and the ignition system work properly.
