2001 Dodge Dakota Camshaft Position Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Reinstall a Camshaft Position Sensor Without Removing the Distributor on 2001 Dodge Dakota?
A: The distributor on all of these engines can be kept in place while removing the camshaft position sensor. First, take out the air cleaner assembly and break loose the negative battery cable. Open the distributor cap by turning the two screws loose, then pull the wiring harness from the camshaft position sensor. Take off the distributor rotor from the distributor shaft and lift the whole camshaft position sensor assembly out of the distributor housing. When you reinstall the camshaft position sensor in the distributor, line up its notch with the one on the distributor housing. Hook up the electrical harness again, set in the rotor and fasten the distributor cap using the screws. Now, it's time to set the air cleaner assembly back into position.
